Purple Angel - Global Dementia Alliance

Purple Angel, launched on January 12, 2012, was founded by Norman McNamara after his own dementia diagnosis at age 50. It began as a local effort in Torbay, Devon, UK, to create the first Dementia Friendly resort, with Norman encouraging local shop staff to read informational guides on dementia.

Success in Torbay quickly grew, with the Purple Angel symbolizing the movement and honoring Norman’s wife, Elaine. By November 2013, the campaign had expanded globally with over 1,000 ambassadors.

Purple Angel now drives worldwide dementia awareness, creating Dementia Friendly Communities, Memory Cafes, and educational resources for various groups, including schools and emergency services.

Purple Angel Tips and Best Practices for Dementia Communication

When communicating with people who have dementia, it’s essential to approach interactions with warmth, awareness, and sensitivity:

Start by greeting them thoughtfully, considering their ability to recognize you, and use a warm tone.
Adjust your physical approach to ensure they can see you clearly, and use gentle touch if they respond positively to it.
Minimize background noise to improve concentration, and consciously relax to match their slower pace.
Understand their emotional state and be open to following their conversational lead. Avoid correcting their mistakes directly and instead gently guide the conversation.
Stay patient, especially during emotional moments, and use positive, simple language.

Remember, effective communication may require extra effort, but it’s crucial for maintaining their emotional well-being.
