John Regan is the founder of Tugboat Caregiving and a family caregiver whose work is rooted directly in lived experience.
For more than eight years, John has been a family caregiver for three people he loves — beginning with his mother in 2018, followed by his aunts, one of whom is living with dementia, and his father — all while working full-time as a technologist with more than 30 years of experience.
Through those experiences, John came to understand just how quickly family caregivers can find themselves becoming case managers, advocates, researchers, insurance navigators, technology support, and decision-makers — often without training, preparation, or a roadmap.
He created Tugboat Caregiving to become the navigator he wishes he had during his own caregiving journey: an AI-powered “crew” designed to help family caregivers better understand what may be coming next, determine what needs attention first, and reduce the burden of trying to keep every detail inside their heads.
John is also an outspoken realist about caregiving technology and artificial intelligence. He believes the technology families need most is not always the flashiest or most expensive. His approach emphasizes practical solutions, affordability, transparency, and being honest about where AI can genuinely support caregivers — and where technology and marketing may be getting ahead of reality.
Tugboat Caregiving was built entirely from his lived experience as a family caregiver.
