Chapter 18 – “Life After Caregiving” Featuring Joe Vazquez

What happens when the caregiving journey ends, but the emotional and physical impact of that experience continues?

In this deeply personal chapter of The Caregiver’s Journal, hosts Lance A. Slatton and Christina Keys welcome Joe Vazquez, who shares his heartbreaking journey of caring for his wife, Laura, following a devastating traumatic brain injury (TBI).

On February 28, 2021, Joe returned home to discover Laura unconscious in their backyard after a tragic accident. Doctors initially believed she would not survive the week. Against extraordinary odds, Laura lived another two and a half years.

During that time, Joe faced the overwhelming realities of spousal caregiving, including medical uncertainty, emotional exhaustion, changes in their relationship, difficult long-term care decisions, and the heartbreaking progression of Laura’s injuries.

Joe candidly reflects on the complexities of their marriage before the accident, the unexpected moments of tenderness during Laura’s recovery, and the emotional challenges of caring for someone whose personality and abilities had dramatically changed.

Following Laura’s passing, Joe faced another difficult journey: learning how to live again after caregiving.

He shares how therapy, family support, exercise, and a renewed commitment to his health helped him begin rebuilding his life, including losing 100 pounds after years of caregiving stress.

Together, Lance, Christina, and Joe explore caregiver burnout, traumatic brain injury, anticipatory grief, losing a spouse, and the often-overlooked challenges of finding purpose and identity after caregiving ends.

Joe’s powerful story reminds us that caregiving does not simply end when someone we love passes away. Its impact can remain long afterward, shaping our health, relationships, and understanding of what comes next.

Because even after caregiving ends, the caregiver’s story continues.
